The mountain routes of West Java, centred on Bandung and running south-east through Tasikmalaya and Banjar. The climb out of Jakarta into the Priangan highlands is the most photogenic stretch of railway in the country — tea plantations, deep gorges and a series of colonial-era viaducts. Trains here are slower by design, and that is the point: this is a corridor to ride for the journey rather than the destination. Conventional services on the Jakarta–Bandung leg now compete with the Whoosh high-speed line, which is faster but sees almost none of the scenery.
