Every train route in Indonesia, honestly assessed

Journey times, named services, fare bands and — unlike the booking sites — a straight answer on which class is actually worth paying for on each route.

Indonesia's railways are not one connected network. Java carries almost all intercity service; Sumatra has four separate systems; Sulawesi has one new line.

The routes most people actually need, and the one journey worth taking purely for its own sake.

What this site is for

Booking aggregators will sell you a ticket. They will not tell you that eksekutif is a waste of money on an overnight you will sleep through, that Gambir and Pasar Senen are different stations serving different classes, or that the Bandung to Yogyakarta morning departure is the best rail journey in the country.

Every route page here carries a recommendation on which class to book, a scenery rating we are willing to mark as merely functional, and fare bands rather than fixed prices — because Indonesian fares move with the season and a stale number is worse than none.
