Jakarta to Malang by Train

Around 880km and thirteen to fifteen hours, this is the full east–west traverse: Jakarta, Purwokerto, Yogyakarta, Solo, Madiun, Blitar and finally Malang. It is the longest single train journey Indonesia offers.

Every service on this route runs overnight, which is the sensible way to do it — board in the evening in Jakarta, wake in Central Java, arrive in Malang late morning.

Which trains run this route: Gajayana is the eksekutif flagship and the most comfortable option. Matarmaja, Brantas and Majapahit cover the budget end from Pasar Senen and are considerably cheaper for a considerably harder night.

On a journey this long the class decision actually matters. Fourteen hours in older ekonomi stock is genuinely tiring; the newer-generation carriages are a different proposition entirely. Gajayana in eksekutif is expensive but defensible here in a way it is not on shorter runs.
