Booking Tickets

Buying an Indonesian train ticket as a foreign visitor is straightforward once you know the three or four things that are not obvious. This page covers those.

The official channel is Access by KAI, available as an app and a website. It sells every conventional long-distance service and is the cheapest option because it adds no booking fee.

Third-party sellers including Traveloka and tiket.com also sell KAI tickets and are sometimes easier for foreign payment cards. They typically add a small fee.

Whoosh is separate. The high-speed Jakarta–Bandung service is run by KCIC, not KAI, and does not appear in the KAI app at all. It has its own booking system.

Indonesian residents book with a national ID number. Foreign passengers use a passport number instead, entered in the same field.

Enter it exactly as printed on the passport, with no spaces. The number is checked against your physical document at the boarding gate, and at larger stations the check is increasingly automated by facial recognition tied to the booking. A mismatch means being turned away, so this is worth getting right.

Carry the passport itself, not a photocopy or a photo on your phone.

The booking window opens 45 days before departure.

For ordinary travel, a few days ahead is usually enough on most routes. The exceptions are significant: around Idul Fitri, Christmas, New Year and the Indonesian school holidays, popular services sell out within hours of the window opening. If your travel falls in those periods, book at 45 days.

Eksekutif class on the Jakarta–Yogyakarta and Jakarta–Surabaya corridors is the first to go on any busy weekend.

Check in at the gate with your booking code and passport. Larger stations have self-service kiosks that print a boarding pass; smaller ones handle it manually at a counter.

Arrive thirty minutes early at major stations. Indonesian trains depart punctually and the gate closes before departure.

Luggage: you take your bags on board and put them on the overhead racks. The allowance is 20kg per person across all classes. Larger cases can go in the space behind the rearmost seats in eksekutif carriages. Enforcement is light in practice but not guaranteed.
