Jakarta to Bandung by Train

The classic mountain climb into the Priangan highlands — three hours of viaducts, gorges and tea country, now competing with a 40-minute high-speed alternative.

Eksekutif, left side of the train heading east — the viaduct views are worth the seat choice.
Jakarta to Bandung by Train

The conventional line from Jakarta to Bandung covers about 170km and climbs from sea level to roughly 700m. It is the most consistently beautiful stretch of railway in Indonesia: the section around Purwakarta and the descent into the Bandung basin crosses a series of colonial-era viaducts over deep ravines.

Since the Whoosh high-speed line opened in 2023 the conventional service has been under pressure, and the pattern of departures has changed. Check current schedules when booking rather than assuming the historic timetable still applies.

The honest comparison: Whoosh does the journey in around 40 minutes but runs largely through tunnels and cuttings and terminates outside the city. The conventional train takes three hours, arrives at Bandung's central station, and shows you the mountains. If you are commuting, take Whoosh. If this is part of a trip through Java, take the slow train.
