Compartment Suite: Indonesia's Highest Train Class

The Compartment Suite is the top of Indonesia's rail network. It launched on 28 September 2023, timed to KAI's 78th anniversary, and entered commercial service on 10 October 2023 on the Bima and Argo Semeru services between Gambir and Surabaya Gubeng.

Each carriage holds only 16 private rooms, one passenger each. Doors slide open automatically. Seats recline to a full 180 degrees and rotate so you are never travelling backwards, and lighting and air conditioning are controlled from the seat. There is an attendant call button rather than the usual business of waving someone down.

What is easy to miss: the fare includes lounge access before departure, with hot drinks, snacks and a toilet with a shower. On an overnight departure from Gambir that is genuinely useful, and it is not something the booking sites make obvious.

Is it worth it? On the twelve-hour Jakarta to Surabaya run, yes, if the budget is there. It is the only class in Indonesia offering a fully private room, and it costs a fraction of what comparable private accommodation costs on European or Japanese luxury trains. On short daytime routes it would be extravagant, but it is not offered on those anyway.

Demand is climbing sharply. The service carried 26,123 passengers in the first half of 2026, up nearly 65 percent on the same period the previous year, so book well ahead.
