Until May 2026 there was no direct train between Bandung and the eastern tip of Java. The Sangkuriang, which KAI launched on 1 May 2026, now covers the roughly 1,000km from Bandung to Ketapang at Banyuwangi in a single overnight run of around 16 hours, one of the longest scheduled journeys on the network.
The route: the train leaves Bandung in the middle of the afternoon and runs east through the Priangan highlands via Cipeundeuy, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis and Banjar, then along the southern line through Kroya, Kutoarjo, Yogyakarta and Solo Balapan in the evening, and Madiun, Jombang and Mojokerto around midnight. It reverses at Surabaya Gubeng in the small hours, then heads south-east through Sidoarjo, Bangil, Probolinggo and Jember, over the plantation hills around Kalibaru and down via Banyuwangi Kota to Ketapang shortly before 7am.
Classes: the Sangkuriang carries eksekutif and premium ekonomi carriages plus a Compartment Suite coach, with private lie-flat cabins, which is the obvious choice for a journey this long if the budget allows. There is a dining car and trolley service.
The scenery: leaving at 14:45 means the best part of the route, the climb out of Bandung and the Priangan hills towards Tasikmalaya and Banjar, passes in afternoon daylight. Day breaks again around Jember, so you see the Kalibaru hills on the final approach.
The Bali connection: Ketapang station is a short walk from Ketapang ferry port, where boats leave for Gilimanuk on Bali around the clock, so you can be across the strait by mid-morning. Banyuwangi is also the base for the Ijen crater.
Would you rather break it up? A night in Malang for Mount Bromo, then the Tawang Alun or Ijen Ekspres on to Banyuwangi, turns one long haul into two much better days.
The Sangkuriang runs once a day. Check current times and fares in Access by KAI. For the opposite direction, see Banyuwangi to Bandung.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
