Roughly 450km from Bandung to Solo Balapan, taking around seven and a quarter to eight and a half hours. The line leaves Bandung via Kiaracondong and Cibatu, threads through the hills past Tasikmalaya, Ciamis and Banjar, then drops to the south coast plain at Kroya and runs east through Kebumen, Kutoarjo and Yogyakarta to Solo.
Which trains run this route: the Lodaya is the dedicated Bandung–Solo service, running twice a day each way with eksekutif and new-generation premium ekonomi. Several long-distance trains heading for East Java also call at Solo: the all-eksekutif Argo Wilis by day and Turangga overnight, plus Malabar and Mutiara Selatan. From Kiaracondong, the budget ekonomi Pasundan and Kahuripan also pass through Solo. Since May 2026 the Sangkuriang to Banyuwangi leaves Bandung at 14:45 and reaches Solo Balapan at about 22:00, with a Compartment Suite coach as well as eksekutif and premium ekonomi.
Take the morning departure. The highlight is the first three hours out of Bandung, where the line clings to valley sides between Cibatu and Banjar. The morning Lodaya does this section in full daylight and reaches Solo by mid-afternoon. The evening train arrives in Solo in the early hours of the morning, which is hard on anyone without a hotel booked. The afternoon Sangkuriang is a good compromise: the hills in daylight and a late-evening arrival.
Getting off. Long-distance trains terminate or call at Solo Balapan, the main station, close to the centre and the starting point for the airport rail link. If Yogyakarta suits you better, every one of these trains stops there an hour earlier (see Bandung to Yogyakarta).
For the opposite direction, see Solo to Bandung. Check current departures and fares in Access by KAI.
