Bandung to Yogyakarta by Train

Seven hours across the spine of Java through Tasikmalaya and Banjar — arguably the finest daytime rail journey in the country.
Which class to book
Lodaya, morning departure, eksekutif. This is the one journey where paying for the window is unambiguously right.
Bandung to Yogyakarta by Train

This is the route to take if you only take one long train in Indonesia. Roughly 400km from Bandung to Yogyakarta Tugu, running south-east through Tasikmalaya, Banjar and Kroya, it passes through hill country, forest and paddy terraces for most of its length.

The stretch between Bandung and Banjar is the highlight — the line clings to valley sides with volcanoes visible on clear mornings. Take a daytime departure. The overnight services cover the same ground but you will see none of it.

Which trains run this route: Lodaya is the dedicated Bandung–Yogyakarta–Solo service. Malabar covers the same corridor. Turangga and Mutiara Selatan pass through en route to Surabaya, and Argo Wilis runs the full Bandung–Surabaya day service.

Book the Lodaya morning departure if you can. It reaches the best scenery in good light and arrives in Yogyakarta in the early evening.
