Yogyakarta to Bandung by Train

Seven hours north-west into the Priangan highlands — the best daytime rail journey in Indonesia, and better in this direction.
Which class to book
Morning Lodaya in eksekutif. This is the single journey on the network where the window seat is worth planning around.

Around 400km north-west from Yogyakarta Tugu to Bandung, taking six and a half to eight hours through Kroya, Banjar and Tasikmalaya.

This is the finest daytime journey in Indonesia and it is better travelled in this direction. Heading west, the landscape improves steadily: gentle paddy country early on, then hill terrain through Banjar, and finally the climb into the Priangan highlands with volcanoes visible on clear afternoons.

Which trains run this route: Lodaya is the dedicated service. Malabar covers the same corridor, and Argo Wilis, Turangga and Mutiara Selatan pass through from Surabaya.

Take a morning departure. Lodaya leaving Yogyakarta in the morning reaches the best terrain in good afternoon light and arrives in Bandung at a civilised hour. The overnight services cover identical ground and show you none of it.
