Since May 2026 the Sangkuriang has linked Ketapang, at Banyuwangi on Java's eastern tip, directly with Bandung in the West Java highlands. It covers roughly 1,000km in around 17 hours, one of the longest scheduled journeys on the Indonesian network, and before it launched the trip meant at least one change, usually in Surabaya or Yogyakarta.
The route: the train leaves Ketapang in the middle of the afternoon, calls at Banyuwangi Kota and climbs through the plantation hills around Kalibaru in daylight before running down through Jember, Probolinggo and Bangil to Surabaya Gubeng in the evening, where it reverses. It then heads west overnight along the southern line through Jombang and Madiun, Solo Balapan and Yogyakarta in the small hours, and Kutoarjo, Kroya and Banjar towards dawn.
The best bit comes last: the final stretch from Banjar through Ciamis and Tasikmalaya and up through the Priangan highlands into Bandung runs in morning light, and it is some of the finest railway scenery in Java. Arrival in Bandung is mid-morning.
Classes: eksekutif and premium ekonomi carriages, plus a Compartment Suite coach with private lie-flat cabins, worth considering for a 17-hour overnight run. There is a dining car and trolley service.
Coming from Bali: ferries from Gilimanuk land at Ketapang ferry port, a short walk from the station. A morning crossing, or a pre-dawn trip to the Ijen crater, leaves plenty of time to make the afternoon departure.
Would you rather break it up? Stopping in Malang for Mount Bromo and continuing on the Malabar makes a much more rewarding crossing if you have the days.
The Sangkuriang runs once a day. Check current times and fares in Access by KAI. For the opposite direction, see Bandung to Banyuwangi.
