Banyuwangi to Surabaya by Train

Arriving from Bali by ferry and continuing by rail — six hours north-west, with the best scenery in the first half.
Which class to book
Ekonomi on a daytime departure, and allow an hour of slack after the ferry before your train leaves.

Around 300km north-west from Ketapang at Banyuwangi to Surabaya Gubeng, taking five and a half to seven hours through Kalibaru, Jember and Probolinggo.

This is the arrival route from Bali. Ferries from Gilimanuk dock at Ketapang around the clock and take about an hour; the station is a short walk from the terminal. That makes it entirely possible to leave Bali in the morning and be in Surabaya the same evening without flying.

Travelling west, the good scenery comes early: the climb through plantation country around Kalibaru begins not long after departure, while the later stretch along the coast is flatter.

Which trains run this route: Mutiara Timur is the main service, with Probowangi covering the ekonomi end. Some services continue past Surabaya or originate onward to Malang.

Build in buffer time on the ferry side. Crossings are frequent but boarding, ticketing and the walk to the station all add up, and missing a train here can mean a long wait.
