Java's smaller railway towns, each worth knowing if your itinerary passes through. Cirebon on the north coast is a batik centre and the shortest genuinely useful run out of Jakarta. Purwokerto marks the point where the southern line climbs into the hills and is the gateway to Baturraden. Garut, in a volcanic basin south-east of Bandung, got its trains back in 2022 after almost forty years and now has two direct services a day to Jakarta, plus the local Commuter Line Garut over the Nagreg pass to Bandung. Probolinggo is the standard jumping-off point for Mount Bromo. Jember, the plantation town of East Java's Tapal Kuda, has its own direct eksekutif trains to Jakarta, the Pandalungan and Pandalungan 2, as well as frequent services to Surabaya. Banyuwangi matters most of all: Ketapang station sits beside the ferry terminal for Bali, making the island reachable from Java entirely by public transport, with direct trains on to Surabaya, Malang and, on the day-long Sri Tanjung and the Wijayakusuma, all the way to Yogyakarta. The overnight Sangkuriang links Ketapang directly with Bandung, and the Blambangan Ekspres runs all the way to Jakarta Pasar Senen, the longest train journey in Indonesia.
