Purwokerto to Jakarta by Train

Around 360km west from Purwokerto to Jakarta, taking four and a half to five and a half hours on the southern line.

Purwokerto is a junction rather than a destination, which is exactly what makes it useful. Services split here between the Yogyakarta line and the Bandung line, and almost every southern-line train calls, so westbound departures are frequent throughout the day.

Leaving Purwokerto the line runs down out of the hills before flattening towards the coast, so the interesting scenery comes in the first hour rather than the last. If you have been up at Baturraden on Mount Slamet, an afternoon departure gives you the descent in good light.
