About 310km from Ketapang at Banyuwangi to Malang, taking roughly seven hours. Trains run west through Banyuwangi Kota and the plantation hills around Kalibaru, then down through Jember, Probolinggo and Pasuruan to Bangil, where they leave the Surabaya line and climb south through Lawang into Malang.
Which trains run this route: two a day. The Tawang Alun is the early-morning ekonomi service, one of the cheapest long-distance tickets on the network, arriving in Malang around midday. The Ijen Ekspres, launched in February 2025, leaves Ketapang in the evening with eksekutif and new-generation ekonomi carriages, but reaches Malang in the early hours of the morning.
Check your Malang station. The Tawang Alun terminates at Malang Kotalama, a smaller station south of the centre, while the Ijen Ekspres runs to the main Malang station. Make sure your accommodation pick-up knows which one.
Why take it: Banyuwangi is the base for the Ijen crater and the arrival point from Bali, and Malang is the natural base for Mount Bromo. This train links the two directly. Ketapang station is a short walk from the ferry terminal, so if you are coming over from Gilimanuk you can step off the boat and onto the train. The climb through Kalibaru in the first couple of hours is the most scenic part of the journey, so the morning Tawang Alun gets the views.
