Banyuwangi to Yogyakarta

Straight off the Bali ferry and across East Java to Yogyakarta: ten to thirteen hours on the Sri Tanjung, Wijayakusuma or Sangkuriang.
Which class to book
Wijayakusuma eksekutif: a later start after the ferry or Ijen and a far more comfortable seat for eleven-plus hours. Take the Sri Tanjung only if the lowest fare matters most.
Banyuwangi to Yogyakarta

About 620km from Ketapang at Banyuwangi to Yogyakarta. Trains climb first through the plantation hills around Kalibaru, then run down through Jember, Probolinggo and Bangil to Surabaya Gubeng, before taking the southern line west through Jombang, Madiun and Solo into Yogyakarta.

Which trains run this route: the Sri Tanjung is the ekonomi-only day train, leaving Ketapang early in the morning and arriving at Yogyakarta Lempuyangan in the evening, around thirteen hours later. It is one of the cheapest long-distance tickets on the network. The Wijayakusuma, which continues on to Cilacap, leaves Ketapang in the late morning with eksekutif and ekonomi carriages and reaches Yogyakarta late in the evening. Since May 2026 the Sangkuriang, which runs on to Bandung, also leaves Ketapang in the middle of the afternoon and reaches Yogyakarta Tugu at around 1am, with eksekutif, premium ekonomi and a Compartment Suite coach. The small-hours arrival only suits you if your accommodation will let you check in.

Coming from Bali: ferries from Gilimanuk land at Ketapang ferry port, a short walk from Ketapang station. To make the early Sri Tanjung you would need to cross the night before, so most people coming over from Bali stay a night in Banyuwangi, often combined with a pre-dawn trip to the Ijen crater, and take a train the next day.

Check your arrival station. The Sri Tanjung terminates at Lempuyangan, east of the centre, not at Tugu. Lempuyangan is still within reach of Malioboro by taxi or ride-hail, but book accommodation pick-ups to the right station.

Worth splitting? Thirteen hours on a basic ekonomi seat is a long day. If you have time, a stop in Malang for Mount Bromo breaks the journey into two much more pleasant halves, with the daytime Malioboro Ekspres covering the second leg to Yogyakarta.
