About 620km from Yogyakarta to Ketapang at Banyuwangi, on Java's eastern tip. Trains run the full length of the southern line through Klaten, Solo, Madiun and Jombang to Surabaya Gubeng, then turn south-east through Sidoarjo, Bangil, Probolinggo and Jember before climbing through the plantation hills around Kalibaru to the coast.
Which trains run this route: the Sri Tanjung is the classic option: an ekonomi-only daytime train from Yogyakarta Lempuyangan that leaves early in the morning and reaches Ketapang in the evening, around thirteen hours later, and is one of the cheapest long-distance tickets on the network. The Wijayakusuma, which runs through from Cilacap, calls at Yogyakarta in the evening with eksekutif and ekonomi carriages and arrives in Ketapang early the next morning. Since May 2026 the Sangkuriang, coming through from Bandung, also calls at Yogyakarta Tugu late in the evening and reaches Ketapang just before 7am in around nine and a half hours, the quickest option, with eksekutif, premium ekonomi and a Compartment Suite coach.
Check your Yogyakarta station. The Sri Tanjung starts from Lempuyangan, east of the centre, not from Tugu. Allow time to get there for an early departure.
The Bali connection: Ketapang station is a short walk from Ketapang ferry port, where boats leave for Gilimanuk on Bali around the clock. The overnight Wijayakusuma and Sangkuriang put you on the ferry first thing in the morning; the Sri Tanjung arrives after dark, so most people stay a night in Banyuwangi, which is also the base for the Ijen crater.
Is it worth doing in one go? Only if you want to cover the distance cheaply or are happy to sleep on the train. The scenery is best at the far end, through Kalibaru, which the Sri Tanjung passes in daylight. Otherwise, breaking the journey with a night in Malang for Bromo is the more rewarding way to cross East Java.
