About 100km west along the coast from Probolinggo to Surabaya Gubeng, taking under two and a half hours.
This is the leg most people take coming down from Mount Bromo. Shared minibuses run from Cemoro Lawang on the caldera rim back to Probolinggo station, and the train onward to Surabaya from there is cheap, frequent and considerably less stressful than arranging a private transfer.
Timing matters coming off the mountain. Bromo sunrise trips typically return to Cemoro Lawang mid-morning, and the minibus down takes around two hours, which puts most travellers at Probolinggo station early afternoon with plenty of westbound departures still to come.
Which trains run this route: every westbound service from Banyuwangi calls here, including Mutiara Timur and Probowangi, along with local ekonomi trains.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
