Jember is on the main line between Surabaya and Ketapang, about 195km from Surabaya, and it is a stop for every train running west from Banyuwangi as well as the start of KAI's Pandalungan service to Jakarta. Most journeys to Surabaya take three and a half to four and a quarter hours.
Which trains run this route: the Pandalungan runs from Jember to Jakarta Gambir by way of Surabaya Gubeng and Surabaya Pasarturi; since a second train was added on 18 June 2026 there are two a day, the newer one leaving Jember mid-morning. The Probowangi (ekonomi) and the Mutiara Timur come through from Ketapang to Surabaya Gubeng, the Mutiara Timur passing Jember in the middle of the night. Long-distance trains from Banyuwangi to Central and West Java, including the Sangkuriang, also call at Jember and Surabaya Gubeng.
The route: the line heads west through Rambipuji, Tanggul and Klakah, then down to the coast at Probolinggo and along it through Pasuruan, Bangil and Sidoarjo into Surabaya. A daytime train gives you the volcano views inland and the Madura Strait on the right after Probolinggo.
Gubeng or Pasarturi? Gubeng is the better arrival for the city centre and for onward trains to Yogyakarta and Malang. Pasarturi is the station for the north-coast trains to Semarang and Jakarta. If you are going on to Jakarta anyway, simply stay on the Pandalungan: see Jember to Jakarta.
For the outward trip, see Surabaya to Jember. Check current times and fares in Access by KAI.
