Surabaya to Jakarta via the Northern Line

The fast corridor west, covering roughly 720km from Surabaya Pasarturi via Bojonegoro, Semarang and Cirebon into Jakarta in eight to ten hours.

The Anggrek is the flagship and the quickest scheduled service between the two cities, taking about eight hours. It was called the Argo Bromo Anggrek until KAI shortened the name on 9 May 2026; the route, timetable and classes did not change, so older guides and some booking sites may still use the old name. The trade-off is scenery: the north coast is flat, industrial and largely uninteresting, so this is the route to take when you want the hours back rather than the view.

Which trains run this route: The Anggrek and Sembrani run eksekutif into Gambir; the Anggrek also carries a Luxury coach and, overnight, a Compartment Suite car. Gumarang sits in the middle. Kertajaya covers the budget end into Pasar Senen.

This corridor carries the newer-generation ekonomi stock more often than any other, with forward-facing 2+2 seating rather than the older bench arrangement. On an overnight run that stock is genuinely comfortable, and it makes the eksekutif premium hard to justify.

Depart from Pasarturi, not Gubeng — the northern line runs from the former only.
