Jakarta to Surabaya via the Northern Line

The north coast corridor is the shorter and quicker of the two Jakarta–Surabaya routes, covering roughly 720km into Surabaya Pasarturi. Argo Bromo Anggrek is the flagship and the fastest scheduled service between the two cities.

Be clear about the trade-off. This line is flat and largely industrial — ports, rice fields, and long stretches of coastal plain. You are buying time, not views. For a daytime journey the southern line is the better ride; for an overnight, the north coast gets you there sooner and it makes no difference what you cannot see.

Which trains run this route: Argo Bromo Anggrek and Sembrani are the eksekutif services from Gambir. Gumarang offers a mid-tier option. Kertajaya runs from Pasar Senen at the budget end.

This corridor also sees the newer-generation ekonomi carriages more often than any other, with forward-facing seats arranged two-by-two rather than the older cramped bench layout. If you are travelling ekonomi, it is worth checking which stock your service uses — the difference is substantial.
