About 300km from Surabaya Gubeng to Ketapang at Banyuwangi, running down the east coast through Probolinggo, Jember and Kalibaru. The daytime service is genuinely good: sea on one side for long stretches, and a climb through plantation country around Kalibaru.
This is the Bali connection. Ketapang station is a short walk from Ketapang ferry port, where boats leave for Gilimanuk on Bali. Ferries run around the clock and take about an hour. From Gilimanuk, buses continue to Denpasar. The whole Surabaya to Bali journey is very achievable in a day using this route, and considerably more interesting than flying.
Which trains run this route: Mutiara Timur is the main service. Probowangi covers the same line at the ekonomi end. Several services also start from Malang rather than Surabaya. Since May 2026 the Sangkuriang from Bandung also calls at Gubeng, leaving at about 01:40 and reaching Ketapang just before 7am, in time for a morning ferry; it is the only train on this line with a Compartment Suite coach. The Blambangan Ekspres from Jakarta, with eksekutif and new-generation ekonomi seats, also calls at Surabaya Pasarturi and Gubeng late in the evening and reaches Ketapang at dawn.
Allow buffer time if you are connecting to a specific ferry. Trains on this line are reliable but the walk, ticketing and boarding at Ketapang add up.

Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
