From Bandung

Bandung sits at around 700m in the Priangan highlands, and every route out of it is scenic. Trains west to Jakarta climb through tea plantations and cross colonial-era viaducts over deep ravines; trains east run the length of Java's southern line through some of the best railway scenery in Asia, to Yogyakarta, Surabaya and, on the Malabar, all the way to Malang for Mount Bromo. Since May 2026 the Sangkuriang goes further still, running overnight across the whole of Java to Ketapang at Banyuwangi, beside the ferry to Bali, with a Compartment Suite coach. Take a daytime departure if you can: the first hours out of Bandung, over the Nagreg pass and on past Cibatu and Tasikmalaya, are the highlight. For a short trip, the reopened branch from Cibatu takes the Papandayan, the Cikuray and the local Commuter Line Garut into the Garut highlands in about two hours. Bandung station is central. The separate high-speed Whoosh service uses Padalarang and Tegalluar, both well outside the city, so factor in the transfer.
