Roughly 770km from Bandung to Malang, taking between 12 and a half and 13 hours. There is one named train on the route, the Malabar, and it is the only way to make this journey without changing. It runs twice a day: once in the morning and once in the evening.
The route. The Malabar leaves Bandung heading south-east through the Priangan highlands towards Tasikmalaya, then follows the southern line through Kebumen, Yogyakarta and Solo Balapan before continuing east and looping round through Kediri into Malang. It calls at more than 25 stations, so it doubles as a useful link from Bandung to Kediri, or from Yogyakarta and Solo to Malang.
Day or night? The morning departure is the one to take if you care about the view: the first few hours out of Bandung cross some of the best railway scenery in Java, with paddy fields and volcanic ridges around Garut and Tasikmalaya. The evening departure covers the same ground in the dark and arrives in Malang early the next morning, which saves a night's accommodation.
Classes. The Malabar carries eksekutif and premium ekonomi carriages, both with 2-2 seating. Business class was withdrawn from the train in 2023.
Is it worth it? Thirteen hours is a long day. If your aim is simply to get from West Java to Bromo country, the train is still more comfortable than the road, but consider breaking the journey in Yogyakarta and continuing east on the Malioboro Ekspres the next day (see Malang to Yogyakarta for that line). Check current times in Access by KAI, as both Malabar departures have shifted between timetables.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
