Roughly 370km from Malang to Yogyakarta, taking about seven hours. Trains leave Malang heading south-west rather than north, looping through Kepanjen, Blitar and Kediri before joining the main southern line at Madiun and continuing through Solo Balapan into Yogyakarta Tugu.
Which trains run this route: Malioboro Ekspres is the dedicated service, named after Yogyakarta's best-known street and now extended beyond Yogyakarta to Purwokerto. It runs with eksekutif and new-image ekonomi carriages. Gajayana, the eksekutif flagship to Jakarta, also calls at Yogyakarta, but as an overnight train it reaches the city in the small hours.
Why this matters for itineraries: the classic visitor loop pairs Yogyakarta, for Borobudur and Prambanan, with Malang, for Bromo. Without this train the obvious route is via Surabaya, which adds a change and several hours. This line does it in one seat.
The run past Blitar and Kediri is rural and pleasant rather than spectacular. Departure times on this corridor have moved between timetables, so check the current schedule in Access by KAI, and book ahead at weekends and school holidays, when capacity is tight.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
