From Malang

Malang sits at around 450m in the East Java highlands, several degrees cooler than the coast and a standing weekend destination for Surabaya residents. Malang station is central and walkable to the colonial-era town centre; some services, including the Tawang Alun, use the smaller Malang Kotalama station to the south instead. Frequent local services run north to Surabaya in about two hours, alongside the early-morning eksekutif Arjuno Ekspres, and the overnight Gajayana, which carries Luxury as well as eksekutif coaches, connects directly to Jakarta Gambir, with the Jayabaya and Matarmaja calling at Semarang on the way. Two routes skip Surabaya altogether: the Ijen Ekspres and Tawang Alun run east to Banyuwangi for Ijen and the Bali ferry, and the Malioboro Ekspres heads west through Blitar and Kediri to Solo and Yogyakarta, linking Bromo country with Borobudur in one seat. That western line also makes Blitar, home to Sukarno's tomb and Candi Penataran, an easy day trip of an hour and a half to under three hours. The Malabar goes further still, running all the way across Java to Bandung in around 13 hours.
