Malang to Surabaya by Train

Two hours down from the highlands to Indonesia's second city, frequent and cheap enough that the train is the obvious choice.
Which class to book
Penataran in ekonomi — and check whether your onward train leaves from Gubeng or Pasarturi before you arrive.

Two hours north from Malang down to the coast at Surabaya Gubeng, covering about 95km with frequent departures throughout the day.

The line drops from Malang's 450m through Singosari and Lawang, with Mount Arjuno on the left heading north. It is a pleasant short run and absurdly cheap — at these fares there is no argument for taking a car.

Which trains run this route: Penataran is the frequent local workhorse. Tumapel covers the same corridor. Long-distance services originating at Malang, including Gajayana, also run this leg.

Arriving into Gubeng puts you on the southern-line side of Surabaya, which is convenient if you are continuing west to Yogyakarta but not if you want the northern line to Semarang and Jakarta — those leave from Pasarturi, across the city.
