Roughly 450km from Solo Balapan to Bandung, taking around seven and a half to eight and a half hours. The line runs west through Klaten and Yogyakarta, along the south coast plain via Kutoarjo, Kebumen and Kroya, then climbs through Banjar, Ciamis and Tasikmalaya into the highlands around Bandung.
Which trains run this route: the Lodaya is the dedicated Solo–Bandung service and the only one that starts in Solo, so it is the easiest to get a seat on. It runs twice a day in each direction, one morning and one evening departure, with eksekutif and new-generation premium ekonomi carriages. Long-distance trains from East Java also call at Solo on their way to Bandung, including the all-eksekutif Argo Wilis and Turangga, plus Malabar and Mutiara Selatan; the budget ekonomi Pasundan runs through to Kiaracondong. Since May 2026 the Sangkuriang from Banyuwangi also calls, leaving Solo Balapan at about 00:30 and reaching Bandung at 08:30; its Compartment Suite cabins make it the most comfortable overnight option.
Take the morning Lodaya. The best of this journey is the final third, where the line winds through the valleys between Banjar and Bandung with tea, paddy terraces and volcanoes on view. The morning train reaches that stretch in the afternoon light; the evening train does it in the dark and gets into Bandung in the small hours.
Bandung or Kiaracondong? Most trains call at Kiaracondong, in the east of the city, before terminating at Bandung station in the centre. Stay on to Bandung unless your hotel is on the eastern side.
If you are starting from Yogyakarta instead, the same trains run the route (see Yogyakarta to Bandung). For the opposite direction, see Bandung to Solo. Check current departures and fares in Access by KAI.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
