Jember sits about 919km from Jakarta by rail, in the Tapal Kuda (horseshoe) region at the eastern end of Java, which makes the Pandalungan one of the longest direct services KAI runs. Trains follow the northern line along the Java Sea coast through Cirebon, Tegal, Pekalongan and Semarang, cut inland through Cepu and Bojonegoro to Surabaya, and then run south-east past Pasuruan and Probolinggo into Jember.
Which trains run this route: the original Pandalungan is an overnight eksekutif train, leaving Gambir in the evening (19:55 under KAI's current timetable) and reaching Jember the next morning. Since 18 June 2026 KAI has added Pandalungan 2, a daytime eksekutif train that leaves Gambir at 09:25 and arrives in Jember at 23:20, calling at Bekasi, Cikarang, Cirebon, Tegal, Pekalongan, Semarang Tawang, Cepu, Bojonegoro, Lamongan, both Surabaya stations, Sidoarjo, Bangil, Pasuruan, Probolinggo, Klakah, Tanggul and Rambipuji. The Pandalungan also carries a 30-seat Priority coach for a few hundred thousand rupiah more. The Blambangan Ekspres, Indonesia's longest train, leaves Jakarta Pasar Senen around midday with eksekutif and new-generation ekonomi carriages and calls at Jember overnight on its way to Banyuwangi.
Which one to book: the evening Pandalungan is the classic choice, turning the journey into a night's sleep with a morning arrival. Pandalungan 2 suits anyone who wants to watch the north coast and the East Java plantations go by, but it arrives close to midnight. The Blambangan Ekspres is the only one with ekonomi seats, and its Jember arrival falls in the small hours.
Check your Jakarta station. Both Pandalungan trains start from Gambir in central Jakarta; the Blambangan Ekspres starts from Pasar Senen.
Why go: Jember is a plantation town best known for the Jember Fashion Carnaval each August and as a base for the Papuma beach coast. If you are heading for Bromo, get off earlier at Probolinggo; for the shorter hop from East Java's capital, see Surabaya to Jember.
Check current departures and fares in Access by KAI. For the return trip, see Jember to Jakarta.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
