Priority and Imperial Tourist Carriages

Twenty- and thirty-seat lounge carriages run by KAI's tourism arm, with meals, a mini bar and a layout built around company rather than commuting.
Which class to book
Best with company. The lounge layout rewards groups and feels strange if you are travelling alone — solo travellers should take Panoramic instead.
Priority and Imperial Tourist Carriages

Priority and Imperial are tourist carriages operated by KAI Wisata, the railway's tourism arm, rather than standard classes you would stumble across when booking a normal ticket.

Imperial carries just 20 passengers in an open coach and bar layout. Priority carries 30 in a lounge-coach configuration. Both include meals, drinks, a mini bar, WiFi, lounge access before departure and exclusive toilet facilities. There is also a Retro class fitted out as a lounge and dining car.

The Java Priority, launched in 2024, deserves a mention of its own: it was the first tourist-only service to run on the Java network since the 1960s.

Carriages attach to scheduled services on routes including Jember to Gambir, Malang to Gambir, Malang to Bandung, Yogyakarta to Pasar Senen and Bandung to Gambir.

Who this suits. Groups and families, mainly. The lounge layout means you are sitting around a shared space rather than in rows, which is pleasant with company and slightly odd alone. These carriages are also charterable, which is how most of the specialist rail tour operators use them.
