Sumatra

Sumatra's railways are four separate networks rather than one connected system, a legacy of Dutch-era construction around specific ports and plantations. There is no through route from one end of the island to the other. The usable segments are Aceh in the far north, the Medan network reaching Kualanamu airport and Rantau Prapat, the short West Sumatra line around Padang and Pariaman, and the South Sumatra network linking Palembang with Lubuklinggau and Tanjungkarang in Lampung. Distances between these networks must be covered by road, ferry or air.
