Medan to Rantau Prapat by Train

Around 275km from Medan south to Rantau Prapat, taking six to eight hours through the palm oil and rubber estates of North Sumatra. This is the principal long-distance service on the northern Sumatra network.

It is not a tourist route and it does not pretend to be. The appeal is seeing a working part of Indonesia that visitors essentially never reach — plantation towns, estate railways and a landscape shaped entirely by agriculture.

Which trains run this route: Sribilah is the main service, running day and overnight departures. Putri Deli covers part of the corridor at the ekonomi end.

Set expectations correctly. Rolling stock here is older than on Java's main lines, English is far less widely spoken, and there is limited tourist infrastructure at the southern end. Go because the journey interests you, not because you need to get to Rantau Prapat.
