Around 30km from Kualanamu International Airport into central Medan, taking 30 to 45 minutes on Indonesia's first dedicated airport railway.
The road alternative runs into the same congestion that affects central Medan, and can take substantially longer at peak times. The train does not vary, which is the whole argument for it.
Onward connections: Medan station is the hub of the North Sumatra network, with services south to Rantau Prapat and Tanjungbalai. If you are arriving into Kualanamu and continuing by rail, everything routes through here, so the airport train is not optional so much as the first leg.
An important limitation: the North Sumatra network is entirely self-contained. There is no rail connection from Medan to any other part of Sumatra, nor to Java. Those journeys require road, ferry or air.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
