Panoramic carriages are built for looking out of, with floor-to-ceiling glass, an automatic sunroof and a signature feature that rotates the seats 90 degrees to face the window. Fares include snacks, drinks, WiFi, lounge access and a dedicated attendant.

Routes. Panoramic carriages attach to scheduled services on a rotating basis, most consistently on these:

• Pangandaran Panoramic — Banjar to Gambir
• Papandayan Panoramic — Garut to Gambir
• Manahan Panoramic — Solo to Gambir
• Argo Wilis Panoramic — Surabaya Gubeng to Bandung, the longest and the most spectacular
• Turangga Panoramic — Surabaya Gubeng to Bandung

Which one to choose. The carriage is only as good as what is outside it, so match it to the scenery. Argo Wilis Panoramic runs the full southern line through the Priangan highlands in daylight and is the clear pick if you have the day and the budget. Parahyangan Panoramic covers the Jakarta to Bandung mountain climb in three hours for a fraction of the price and is the best value introduction.

Avoid pairing a Panoramic carriage with a northern-line route. The windows are wasted on flat coastal plain.
