Jakarta to Yogyakarta by Train

This is the route most visitors to Java end up taking, and it is the one the railway does best. Around a dozen services run each way daily from Gambir and Pasar Senen in central Jakarta to Yogyakarta Tugu, covering roughly 510km of the southern main line.

The daytime run is worth staying awake for. West of Purwokerto the line climbs through the foothills and the landscape turns to terraced paddy, river gorges and volcanic ridgelines. Overnight services trade that view for a saved night of accommodation, which is a reasonable bargain if you are moving quickly.

Which trains run this route: Taksaka and Argo Dwipangga are the premium eksekutif services from Gambir. Argo Lawu and Bima continue beyond Yogyakarta. Progo and Bogowonto are the ekonomi options from Pasar Senen, and considerably cheaper.

Stations matter here. Gambir serves eksekutif services only and sits centrally near Monas. Pasar Senen handles ekonomi departures and is a rougher, busier station. In Yogyakarta, Tugu station is walking distance from Malioboro; Lempuyangan is the ekonomi station and further out.
