The Makassar to Parepare line is the first railway on Sulawesi and the opening section of the planned Trans-Sulawesi network. It runs on standard gauge, unlike the narrower track used throughout Java and Sumatra, and has been operating in stages since 2022 along the segment between Mandai and Garongkong. Be realistic about what it currently offers a visitor: services are infrequent, most passengers are locals or day-trippers from Makassar, and there is little at the intermediate stations. It is worth riding for the karst scenery around Rammang-Rammang rather than as a way of getting anywhere.
