Surabaya to Banyuwangi by Train

About 300km from Surabaya Gubeng to Ketapang at Banyuwangi, running down the east coast through Probolinggo, Jember and Kalibaru. The daytime service is genuinely good: sea on one side for long stretches, and a climb through plantation country around Kalibaru.

This is the Bali connection. Ketapang station is a short walk from the ferry terminal at Gilimanuk crossing. Ferries run around the clock and take about an hour. From Gilimanuk, buses continue to Denpasar. The whole Surabaya to Bali journey is very achievable in a day using this route, and considerably more interesting than flying.

Which trains run this route: Mutiara Timur is the main service. Probowangi covers the same line at the ekonomi end. Several services also start from Malang rather than Surabaya.

Allow buffer time if you are connecting to a specific ferry. Trains on this line are reliable but the walk, ticketing and boarding at Ketapang add up.
