This corridor matters disproportionately to travellers because Ketapang station at Banyuwangi sits beside the ferry terminal for Bali, making it possible to reach the island from Java entirely by public transport. The Surabaya to Banyuwangi run along the east coast is one of the country's better daytime rides, and the Malang line climbs into cooler highland country that most visitors never see.
