Surabaya to Probolinggo by Train

Two hours east along the coast to the main access point for Mount Bromo — the cheapest and least stressful way to start a Bromo trip.
Which class to book
Ekonomi, earliest morning departure. Class is irrelevant here; arriving before the Bromo minibuses dry up is not.
Surabaya to Probolinggo by Train

Probolinggo sits about 100km east of Surabaya and is the standard jumping-off point for Mount Bromo. The train takes under two and a half hours and costs a fraction of a private transfer.

From Probolinggo station, local minibuses run to Cemoro Lawang on the Bromo caldera rim, where most visitors stay before the pre-dawn sunrise trip. Allow time — the minibuses often wait to fill, and the mountain road takes a further two hours.

Which trains run this route: Every Banyuwangi-bound service calls here, including Mutiara Timur and Probowangi, plus local ekonomi services.

A practical warning: arriving late in the day at Probolinggo can mean an expensive private transfer or a night in town, because the shared minibuses thin out in the afternoon. Take a morning departure from Surabaya if Bromo is the goal.
