Solo to Yogyakarta by Train

Sixty kilometres, roughly an hour, and departures throughout the day. The commuter line between Solo Balapan and Yogyakarta is the cheapest useful train journey in Indonesia and the easiest to take spontaneously.

Ticketing works differently. The commuter service is not booked through the long-distance system. You buy at the station or through the commuter app rather than reserving weeks ahead, and seats are unreserved — at busy times you may stand. That is a fair trade for a fare that costs less than a coffee.

Long-distance westbound services also stop at both stations if the timing happens to suit, but paying intercity fares for an hour makes little sense.

Both ends are central: Balapan sits close to the middle of Solo, and Tugu is a short walk from Malioboro. Prambanan lies between the two, though the temple is more easily reached by bus than by rail.
