Jakarta to Semarang by Train

Around 440km from Jakarta, Semarang is the main intermediate stop on the northern corridor and a straightforward five-and-a-half to six-and-a-half hour run.

Semarang Tawang deserves a mention in its own right. The 1914 station hall, with its high dome and arched windows, is one of the great pieces of Indies railway architecture, and it is worth arriving with ten minutes to spare simply to look at it.

Which trains run this route: Argo Muria and Argo Sindoro are the dedicated eksekutif services from Gambir. Every Surabaya-bound northern service also calls here, which pushes effective frequency well above the dedicated Semarang trains alone.

The city itself is often skipped by visitors, which is a shame — the old town has been restored, Lawang Sewu is genuinely interesting, and the hill suburbs are noticeably cooler than the coast. It also makes a sensible staging point if you want to break the Jakarta–Surabaya run.
