Southern Line

The cultural spine of Java, running from Jakarta through Yogyakarta and Solo to Madiun and Surabaya. This is the corridor most visitors actually want: it connects the capital to Borobudur, Prambanan and the kraton cities, and the landscape through Central Java is genuinely worth staying awake for — volcanic ridgelines, terraced paddy and river valleys. Named services include Taksaka, Argo Dwipangga and Bima. Journeys are longer than the northern route but the payoff is scenery and access to the island's heritage sites.
