Jaladara: Solo's Street Steam Train

Jaladara is a steam locomotive that runs along the street tracks through the middle of Solo, hauling restored wooden carriages in Victorian style. It is a charter operation rather than a scheduled service, so it runs when a group books it or when KAI Wisata puts on a public departure.

The appeal is the setting rather than the distance. The line runs through the city itself, past shopfronts and traffic, which makes it a very different proposition from a preserved railway running through countryside. Onlookers stop to watch, and it draws a crowd.

How to ride it. Individual tickets appear occasionally around holidays and city events. Otherwise it is chartered, and the specialist rail tour operators that run Java itineraries almost always include it, alongside Ambarawa.

Solo is a sensible base regardless, with good rail connections west to Yogyakarta and east to Surabaya, so building a day around Jaladara is not difficult if the timing works.
