Jakarta to Garut

Two direct trains a day to the highland town under Mount Cikuray — a line that had no passenger service for almost four decades until it reopened in 2022, and one of the most scenic runs out of the capital.
Which class to book
Papandayan in eksekutif, or the Panoramic car if you want the Nagreg and Kadungora scenery at its best. The Cikuray is the budget option, with ekonomi seats only.
Jakarta to Garut

Garut sits in a high volcanic basin south-east of Bandung, ringed by Papandayan, Cikuray and Guntur. For most of living memory the only way there was a long bus or car journey: the branch from Cibatu closed to passengers in the early 1980s. It reopened on 25 March 2022, and Garut now has two direct trains a day each way from Jakarta.

Which trains run this route: the Papandayan, launched in January 2024, runs from Gambir in central Jakarta with eksekutif and premium ekonomi carriages plus a Panoramic car with a glass roof and oversized windows. It leaves Gambir in the morning and reaches Garut around midday, roughly five hours. The Cikuray is the subsidised ekonomi service from Pasar Senen, calling at Bekasi, Cikarang, Karawang, Cikampek, Purwakarta, Cimahi, Bandung and Kiaracondong before Nagreg, Leles and Cibatu. It runs one round trip a day, in the evening from Jakarta, and is one of the cheapest long-distance tickets on Java.

Why the view is worth it: both trains cross the hills between Purwakarta and Padalarang on the old Bandung line, then climb east out of Bandung over the Nagreg pass and drop into the Garut basin through rice terraces at Leles and Kadungora. On the Papandayan this is where the Panoramic car earns its fare; on a morning departure you see it all in daylight.

What to expect at the other end: Garut station is close to the town centre. The town is the base for the Papandayan crater, the Darajat and Cipanas hot springs, and Kampung Naga, the traditional Sundanese village on the road to Tasikmalaya.

Booking: both trains are booked through Access by KAI and the usual partner apps, from the standard booking window. The Cikuray fills up fast at weekends and before public holidays because it is so cheap. For the return journey see Garut to Jakarta; if you are already in Bandung, see Bandung to Garut.
