Tegal is the main town on the western half of Central Java's north coast, about 150km west of Semarang on the Pantura line through Weleri, Batang, Pekalongan and Pemalang. The trip takes roughly two hours ten to two and a half hours.
The Kaligung is the train for this route. It is KAI Daop 4 Semarang's regional agglomeration service, running several times a day from Semarang Poncol along the Semarang, Pekalongan, Tegal, Brebes and Cirebon corridor, with eksekutif and ekonomi coaches. Some trips terminate at Tegal, others carry on to Brebes or Cirebon Prujakan, so any westbound Kaligung will get you to Tegal. KAI Daop 4 reports close to a million Kaligung passengers in the first half of 2026 and added an extra coach in September 2026 to cope with demand, so book ahead on Fridays and Sundays.
Long-distance trains: Tegal is a major stop on the northern main line, and many trains between Semarang and Jakarta, as well as some heading south-west towards Purwokerto, call here. They can be quicker, and KAI often sells short-distance seats on them, but the choice of seats depends on how full the train is from Surabaya or Semarang. Check Access by KAI for what is on sale.
The ride: after Weleri the line climbs through the Alas Roban hills and then runs right beside the Java Sea around Plabuan; sit on the right-hand side heading west. Beyond Batang it is flat coastal country of rice fields, fishponds and batik towns. Pekalongan, about halfway, is Indonesia's best-known batik city and an easy stop in its own right.
Why go: Tegal is the home of the warteg, the cheap canteen found all over Java, and has a seafront and a Dutch-era station. It is also the nearest railhead for the Guci hot springs on the slopes of Mount Slamet, about an hour inland by road.
For the return trip, see Tegal to Semarang. Going further west? The Kaligung and the long-distance trains continue to Cirebon: see Semarang to Cirebon, or Semarang to Jakarta for the whole run to the capital.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
