From Tegal to Semarang is about 150km east along the Pantura line through Pemalang, Pekalongan, Batang and Weleri, taking roughly two hours ten to two and a half hours.
The Kaligung is the train for this route. It is the regional agglomeration service run by KAI Daop 4 Semarang on the Cirebon, Brebes, Tegal, Pekalongan and Semarang corridor, with eksekutif and ekonomi coaches, and it ends at Semarang Poncol, west of the old town. Some trips start at Tegal and others come through from Brebes or Cirebon Prujakan. KAI reports close to a million Kaligung passengers in the first half of 2026, so book ahead around weekends.
Long-distance trains: Tegal is a major stop on the northern main line, and many trains from Jakarta to Semarang and Surabaya call here, some at Semarang Tawang, the restored 1914 station by the old town. They can be quicker, and KAI often sells short-distance seats on them, but availability depends on how full they are from Jakarta.
The ride: flat coastal country of rice fields, fishponds and batik towns as far as Batang, then the line runs right beside the Java Sea around Plabuan before climbing through the Alas Roban hills; sit on the left-hand side heading east for the sea. Pekalongan, Indonesia's best-known batik city, is about halfway.
At Semarang: from Poncol it is a short taxi ride to the old town, Lawang Sewu and Tawang. Semarang is also where you change for the Banyubiru to Solo, trains to Surabaya and the Joglosemarkerto to Yogyakarta.
For the westbound trip, see Semarang to Tegal. Starting further west? See Cirebon to Semarang.
