Yogyakarta International Airport opened at Kulon Progo, roughly 40km west of the city, replacing the far more convenient Adisutjipto. The rail link is what makes that distance manageable.
Two services share the line. The YIA Xpress runs non-stop between the airport station and Yogyakarta (Tugu) in around 35 to 40 minutes. The regular KA Bandara YIA calls at Wates on the way and is cheaper. Between them there are around two dozen departures in each direction a day, from early morning into the evening, so a gap of more than an hour is unusual. Road transfers cover the same route in an hour or more depending on traffic.
Who runs it: since 17 September 2026 the line has been operated by KAI Commuter, taking over from Railink. Fares, routes and timetables carried over unchanged, but ticketing moved: buy through the Access by KAI or C-Access apps, or the official KA Bandara reservation site. Older guides pointing you to the Railink website or app are out of date.
Practical note: the first and last trains do not cover every flight, so check departures against your arrival or departure time, particularly for very early flights.
Tugu station puts you within walking distance of Malioboro and most of the central accommodation. It is also the departure point for services to Jakarta, Solo and Surabaya, so a same-day connection onward is straightforward.
For the journey out to the airport, see Yogyakarta to Yogyakarta Airport.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
