The Prameks (Prambanan Ekspres) is the Yogyakarta region's diesel commuter train, run by KAI Commuter. It once linked Yogyakarta with Solo, but since the electric KRL took over that line in February 2021 it has run only west, from Yogyakarta Tugu to Kutoarjo in Purworejo regency, about 64km away. Trains call at Wates, Wojo and Jenar and take around an hour end to end.
Timetable: there are five departures a day. Trains leave Yogyakarta at 06:40, 11:50, 15:15, 16:20 and 18:05 and reach Kutoarjo at 07:42, 12:49, 16:16, 17:20 and 19:03 (Metro TV, August 2026, and detikJogja, May 2026, both from KAI Commuter). There is a long gap in the middle of the day, so plan around the 11:50 and 15:15.
Fare and tickets: a flat Rp 8,000 one way. Tickets can be booked in Access by KAI up to seven days ahead or bought at the station from three hours before departure while seats last, and detikJogja reports tap-in with a Kartu Multi Trip or bank e-money card at the gates as well. It is a single-class commuter train, so expect bench seating and standing room at busy times.
The ride: after Patukan the line crosses the wide Progo river and runs through the rice fields of Kulon Progo, with the Menoreh hills to the north, past Wates, the regency town. The airport train to YIA shares this stretch but branches off for the airport, so the Prameks is not a way to reach your flight.
Why go: Kutoarjo is a junction on Java's southern main line where several long-distance trains start, among them the ekonomi Sawunggalih to Jakarta Pasar Senen and the Kutojaya Selatan to Bandung Kiaracondong (KAI Daop 5, April 2026). For most visitors, though, this is a slow, cheap way to see the countryside west of Yogyakarta rather than a route to somewhere in particular.
For the return trip, see Kutoarjo to Yogyakarta. Heading east instead? The KRL to Solo also leaves from Tugu.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
