Kutoarjo, in Purworejo regency, is a junction on Java's southern main line and the western end of the Prameks (Prambanan Ekspres), the diesel commuter train KAI Commuter runs into Yogyakarta Tugu. The 64km trip calls at Jenar, Wojo and Wates and takes about an hour.
Timetable: five trains a day leave Kutoarjo at 05:10, 09:05, 13:19, 16:50 and 18:45, arriving at Yogyakarta at 06:10, 10:05, 14:19, 17:52 and 19:45 (Metro TV, August 2026, and detikJogja, May 2026, both from KAI Commuter). The first train is the one local commuters use, and it fills up.
Fare and tickets: a flat Rp 8,000. Book in Access by KAI up to seven days ahead, or buy at the station from three hours before departure while seats last; detikJogja also reports tap-in at the gates with a Kartu Multi Trip or bank e-money card. There is one class, with bench seating.
When it is useful: several long-distance trains start or end at Kutoarjo, including the ekonomi Sawunggalih from Jakarta Pasar Senen and the Kutojaya Selatan from Bandung Kiaracondong (KAI Daop 5, April 2026). If one of those has dropped you at Kutoarjo, the Prameks is the cheap last hour into Yogyakarta, though most through trains on the southern line already continue to Tugu or Lempuyangan and are the simpler choice. The line crosses the Progo river just before Yogyakarta, with the Menoreh hills to the north.
Getting around at the far end: Tugu is a short walk from Malioboro, and it is also where the KRL to Solo and the airport train to YIA start.
For the outbound trip, see Yogyakarta to Kutoarjo.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
