The Batara Kresna is one of the oddest and cheapest train rides in Java. It leaves Solo from Purwosari station, not Solo Balapan, and for its first few kilometres runs along the centre of Jalan Slamet Riyadi, the city's main boulevard, sharing the road with cars and motorbikes. It then heads south through Sukoharjo to Wonogiri, 37km away, in about an hour.
Timetable: there are only two departures a day each way. Trains leave Purwosari at 06:00 and 10:00, calling at Solo Kota (around 06:20 / 10:20), Sukoharjo and Pasar Nguter and reaching Wonogiri at 07:00 and 11:00. Return trains leave Wonogiri at 08:00 and 12:00 and are back at Purwosari at 09:00 and 13:00 (detikJateng, July 2026, from Access by KAI; also Tribun Travel, September 2026). That makes a morning out-and-back easy, but there is nothing in the afternoon, so do not miss the 12:00 return.
Fare and tickets: KAI charges a flat Rp 4,000. It is a subsidised pioneer (perintis) service with a single class and a limited number of seats, so buy a day ahead in Access by KAI or at the station counter, especially at weekends and in school holidays, when it fills up.
The train: the original Batara Kresna railbus was retired in February 2025, after the line's speed limit was raised to 70 km/h. A KRD MCW 302 diesel multiple unit now works the route, which cut the journey from about two hours to one.
Why go: the street-running stretch is the highlight, so sit on the side facing the road. Solo Kota station (Sangkrah) is the stop for the old town east of the kraton. At the far end, Wonogiri is the base for the Gajah Mungkur reservoir on the upper Bengawan Solo. If you like the street-running, Solo's Jaladara steam train uses the same tracks through the city centre.
For the return trip, see Wonogiri to Solo. Heading west instead? The KRL to Yogyakarta also calls at Purwosari.
Journey times vary by service and season. Confirm against current schedules before booking.
Indicative bands only. KAI adjusts fares by season and subclass, so treat these as a guide to the order of magnitude rather than a quote.
